How It Works

Understanding the Age Cut-Off Rule

CBSE mandates a uniform age cut-off date across all affiliated schools. At Dunes Academy, we follow this standard rigorously so that every child joins a class that is developmentally appropriate for their age.

The rule is simple: your child's age on 31st March of the admission year is the reference point. If your child turns 6 on or before 31st March, they are eligible for Class I for that academic session beginning April.

  • Date of birth proof (birth certificate / Aadhaar) is mandatory at the time of admission.
  • Children born on 1st April onward become eligible in the next academic session.
  • No relaxation in the minimum age limit is granted — CBSE does not permit it.
  • Maximum age limits ensure that each class maintains a balanced peer environment for learning.

What You Need to Know

Key Rules & Required Documents

Keep these essentials ready before completing your child's admission registration.

Birth Certificate

The government-issued birth certificate is the primary document for age verification. Aadhaar card with date of birth is also accepted as supporting proof.

Cut-Off: 31st March

Age is calculated as on 31st March of the academic session. Children who turn the required age on or before this date are eligible for that session's admission.

Transfer Certificate (TC)

For Class II and above, a Transfer Certificate from the previous school showing the class last attended is required alongside the birth certificate.

No Direct Entry: X & XII

CBSE regulations strictly prohibit fresh admissions directly into Class X and Class XII. Students must complete the preceding class at the school.

No Age Relaxation

The minimum age requirement carries no relaxation provision. CBSE's mandate on this is absolute and applies uniformly to all affiliated schools.

Age Overlap Between Classes

Small overlaps in the age band (e.g., 11 years qualifying for both Class V max and Class VI min) are normal — the child's academic record determines exact placement.

Common Questions

Age Criteria — FAQs

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about age eligibility at Dunes Academy.

What is the minimum age for Nursery admission at Dunes Academy?
A child must be at least 3 years old as on 31st March of the admission year to be eligible for Nursery. Children who turn 3 after 31st March will need to apply in the following session.
What is the age requirement for Class I admission?
The child must have completed 6 years of age as on 31st March of the admission year to join Class I. This is a CBSE-mandated requirement and applies to all affiliated schools, including Dunes Academy.
Is there an upper (maximum) age limit for admission?
Yes. Each class carries a maximum age cap. The purpose is to maintain age-appropriate peer groupings and learning environments. For example, the maximum age for Class I is 8 years, and for Class XII it is 19 years as on 31st March. Please refer to the table above for class-wise details.
My child misses the cut-off by just a few days. Can an exception be made?
Unfortunately, no. CBSE regulations do not permit any relaxation in the minimum age requirement, regardless of how close the child is to the cut-off date. The school strictly follows board guidelines on this. We recommend planning the application for the following session.
What document is needed to verify my child's age?
The government-issued birth certificate is the primary document. An Aadhaar card showing the date of birth is accepted as additional supporting proof. Inconsistencies between documents must be clarified before the admission process can proceed.
Can a student seek direct admission into Class X or Class XII?
No. As per CBSE norms, direct admissions are not permitted in Class X or Class XII. A student must complete the preceding class (IX or XI) at Dunes Academy before moving up. This rule applies universally to all CBSE-affiliated schools.
Does the age criterion differ for boarding vs. day school students?
No. The age criteria are identical for both boarding and day school students. The same CBSE-mandated minimum and maximum age limits apply regardless of the mode of enrolment.
