nurses

The school nurse serves as the coordinator of school health services in most schools. The school nurse provides first aid, emergency care, referrals to immunizations, care, faculty training and support for health. She also promotes staff and student wellness. School nurses look for learning barriers. School nurses are advocates for students' health and academic success.

Emotional Support

IMPACT ON STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

Students today are more medically diverse than ever, so federal law demands schools provide safe and supportive learning environments for students with chronic and severe disabilities. Schools can offer the necessary support to students with disabilities to allow them to succeed in school. They can also help prevent or reduce risk behavior and identify and refer students to treatment when necessary. This makes educational success easier.

School nurses recommend the following best practices:

  • Offer health screenings for vision and hearing, dental, scoliosis speech, and language
  • Provide emergency care services (e.g. first aid, epinephrine injectable, etc.
  • Assist with chronic disease management (e.g. asthma, diabetes, seizure disorder and other conditions)
  • Establish regular communication between family members, schools, and health care providers
  • Keep staff current on topics like autism, bullying, ADHD, diabetes, and other conditions.
  • Join the school’s emergency management team
  • Develop cultural and linguistic competences to help the school’s specific population and reduce inequalities.
  • Interact with the academic goals of school; make sure that adults understand the relationship between student safety, attendance, health, and achievement by School-based Health Centers.
